Best Beach in Menorca, Spain

There is a staggering number of postcard-perfect beaches on the sun-drenched paradise of Menorca — don’t miss the best one.

As the easternmost island in the Balearic archipelago, Menorca is Spain’s first vantage point for the rising sun. While often overshadowed by its better-known neighbors, Ibiza and Mallorca, Menorca is much quieter than the former and boasts more beaches than the latter (not to mention the stunning sunrise views each morning). With nearly 700 square kilometres of sandy beaches, this sunkissed getaway offers a trove of turquoise waters, breathtaking coastlines, and hidden coves to discover. But if you’re only visiting for one day, which of Menorca’s many beaches is an absolute must-see?

_The Best Beach in Menorca: Cala Sa Mesquida _

The beach of Sa Mesquida has all the trappings of a resort beach — lifeguards, toilets, easy parking, and plenty of delicious restaurants nearby — minus the crowds and cover charges. Just a short drive north of Mahon, the capital and main port of Menorca, Cala Sa Mesquida draws more locals than visitors, resulting in a low-key atmosphere that you won’t find at the more bustling southern beaches like Cala Mitjana and Cala Galdana.

Nestled within the tranquil cove of an authentic fishing village, the beach is flanked by rocky cliffs that protect the waters from wind and boats passing by. The sea gets deep surprisingly fast — perfect for snorkelers, divers, and confident swimmers. At 300 meters (328 yards) in length, there is plenty of space on the sand to spread out, even on one of the rare busy days.

During the island’s peak season (mid-July to mid-September), you’ll find a van parked on the beach selling homemade Italian ice cream. For a more substantial pick-me-up, head to Cap Roig, a nearby restaurant famous for fresh-off-the-boat seafood (don’t miss the fried prawns).
